Safe Mode is like your bomb shelter when Windows explodes. Maybe you got the Blue Screen of Death, or some malware’s screwed up everything.

So now you’re thinking, just press the F8 like we always have, right? Wrong! Windows 10 makes you jump through a lot more hoops. So hold on, I’m going to walk you through it.

Click or tap the Start button, then the Power button. Hold down the Shift key, then hit Restart.

You’ll get a full-screen menu where you’ll want to select Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, Startup Settings.

Tap the Restart button—yes, I know we’ve already done this once! The PC will reboot and bring you—again—to the Startup Settings screen.

Use the number keys to select safe mode.

It is definitely more complicated to get to Safe Mode in Windows 10, and I’m sorry—I didn’t write this operating system! For more Windows tips, go to PCWorld.com.
