While it doesn't seem to be up and working yet, Twitter has announced that it's landed prime real estate on the MSN.com home page. In the future, per Twitter, when a hot news story hits, pertinent tweets from trusted news sources will appear on a red "breaking news" stripe at the top of MSN.com.
Of course, we won't know how it plays out for a few weeks or months, but the intent's intriguing and the venue -- the old MSN.com -- surprising.
Yes, there are lots of news aggregating Twitter accounts. Yes, there are lots of news websites. Yes, you can subscribe to @nytimes, @WSJ, @washingtonpost, @CNN, @AOL, @guardian, and a dozen other sources and weed through the news tweets in real time.
But to the best of my knowledge, this is the first ticker-tape-style vetted news superfeed, based on tweets. It's a great idea.
Real news surfaces first on Twitter. (Real gaffes and real garbage, too.) Now it looks like MSN.com may percolate the best, the fastest.
Microsoft's rebranding of Bing Universal apps to MSN apps -- MSN News, Weather, Travel, Money, Sports, Health & Fitness, Food & Drink -- might not be such a bad idea after all, if Microsoft can pull the Microsoft Network brand (ca. 1995) into the 21st century.
Microsoft has the money. All that's required is vision.
