Sohaib Abbasi, one of the most senior technical minds at Oracle, will retire from the Redwood Shores, Calif.-based vendor at the end of this month, Oracle said Thursday.

Abbasi, a senior vice president, joined Oracle in 1982 and managed the company's tools division since 1984. Most of his responsibilities will be taken over by Charles (Chuck) Rozwat, Oracle's executive vice president of server technologies, an Oracle spokeswoman in Europe said Thursday.

The tools division includes the e-business portal tools, application development tools, business intelligence tools as well as pharmaceutical and Internet learning applications, according to Oracle. As head of the unit, Abbasi drove the development of these tools, Oracle said.

Abbasi also serves on Oracle's executive committee and product development management committee. Oracle did not disclose why Abbasi is retiring or what he will do after leaving Oracle.
