Actuate joins BI buying spree, grabs Nimble Technology

BI vendor snags XML-based information integration company

Actuate Corp. has joined in this month's business intelligence software merger mania, announcing Tuesday its acquisition of Seattle data integration products developer Nimble Technology Inc. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

South San Francisco-based Actuate makes software that lets organizations create analysis and reporting applications. The company said it will incorporate Nimble's XML (Extensible Markup Language)-based information integration technology into its own Actuate 7 platform, to further Actuate's software's integration with a range of XML-enabled systems.

The technology in the Nimble Integration Suite will help Actuate customers create analysis applications tapping disparate data sources, such as databases, Web pages, proprietary systems and data warehouses, the companies said.

The so-called business intelligence sector of data analysis tools is one of the software market niches analysts say is primed for consolidation. Last week, Hyperion Corp. announced plans to buy Brio Software Inc. for $142 million, days after Business Objects SA said it would acquire Crystal Decisions Inc. for $820 million.

Actuate has 2,000 direct customers and several hundred reseller partners, in an array of industries including financial services, pharmaceuticals, insurance and government. The company is scheduled to announce Tuesday afternoon its most recent quarterly financial results. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expect the company to post revenue around $25.8 million.
