OpenOffice releases Version 1.1

OpenOffice.org released the final Version 1.1 of its free open source productivity suite last week after several months of testing. Version 1.1 offers enhanced compatibility with rival Microsoft Office and is loaded with new features, such as the capability of exporting documents to Adobe Systems' PDF and presentations to Macromedia's Flash formats. The product also offers improved XML support. OpenOffice.org Version 1.1 succeeds Version 1.0, which was released in May 2002.

EMC strengthens NAS hand

EMC last week announced it has begun shipping three new NAS devices designed to extend the storage vendor's appeal to departmental and small and midsize business users. The company is attempting to expand its focus beyond the datacenter. The first product, NetWin 200, is based on Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 software. EMC also announced a "gateway" device that can be used to turn EMC's Clariion CX600 and CX400 arrays into NAS devices.

Google Acquires Kaltix

Google has announced the acquisition of Kaltix, a search-technology startup. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Kaltix develops context-sensitive and personalized search offerings designed to speed the search for information on the Web. The startup was founded in July of this year. Google plans to continue the development of Kaltix's search technologies, according to Google officials.
