StarWind provides two free virtualization solutions

StarWind's free V2V conversion tool and free iSCSI SAN software could prove useful in the virtual datacenter

Virtualization administrators will be happy to know that StarWind is now offering two free software tools that could prove quite useful in the virtual datacenter.  The first tool is for virtual hard disk or image migration and the second is an iSCSI SAN software solution.

In this day and age, where people are still testing the waters and trying to figure out which virtualization platform is either right for them or right for a particular use case or application, it becomes important to have an image migration tool for converting virtual machines from one format to another.  StarWind is now providing such a tool and, best of all, it is free.

The company announced StarWind Converter, its free multivendor V2V (Virtual-to-Virtual) image converter that can convert virtual machine images from VMware ESX (VMDK) format to Microsoft Hyper-V (VHD) format and vice versa.  It can also convert these images into StarWind's virtual SAN (IMG) format.

One of the interesting features found in Converter is that it allows IT administrators to easily migrate virtual machines from direct attached storage to shared storage on the network in a quick and easy step.  This gives administrators the ability to move VMDK or VHD images safely to shared storage, allowing for virtual server clustering and ensuring high application and VM availability.  The tool provides a sector by sector copy that does not alter the source image, so that the original can continue to be used.

StarWind Converter is free and downloadable.

Administrators will also be happy to know about StarWind's free iSCSI SAN software.  With the 4.1 release, the company announced a free edition that includes unlimited connections and support for a 2TB capacity.  While the free edition does not include some of the StarWind higher end features like Continuous Data Protection, replication, or mirroring, it still packs enough punch to make a difference for many organizations.  Companies can leverage the free product to help get started with clustering and multihost access.

The free version installs on any standard 64-bit or 32-bit Windows server and converts it into a fully-functional and blazingly fast SAN, offering shared storage to any applications on the network.  It also supports virtual environments such as VMware ESX or VMware ESXi or Microsoft Hyper-V, and can also run inside a virtual machine if you choose.  One of the key features of the StarWind iSCSI Target is that it supports Server Cluster environments with VMware, Hyper-V, Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange, and other server solutions.

"We previously had a very limited free product and discovered that people would really appreciate if we pulled out the limits on this product and expanded it to 2T capacity while still allowing multiple connections.  All other companies sell this product but we wanted to make it accessible to more people to experience the significant benefits of storage virtualization," said Zorian Rotenberg, president and CEO, StarWind Software.  "Like server virtualization, storage virtualization is becoming ubiquitous and we wanted to give any size company a chance to experience this technology and help accelerate progress towards 100 percent virtualization.  When servers and storage are both virtualized the advantages are much greater in improving application and data availability."
