BenQ licenses Flash from Adobe for handsets

Software to enable phone makers to offer customizable user interfaces

BenQ Mobile, the recently launched division of Taiwan's BenQ Corp., on Monday said it licensed Macromedia Flash Lite technology from Adobe Systems Inc. for use in its handsets.

The Flash technology includes the Flash authoring tool and Flash Lite player runtime, and has attracted a community of more than a million designers and developers, Adobe said. It allows mobile phone makers to offer users customizable user interfaces, enhanced content and browsing as well as faster content delivery speeds, the company said.

BenQ Mobile expects to begin integrating Flash Lite into its mobile handsets starting in the fourth quarter of this year.

More than 65 million mobile phone and consumer electronics devices such as televisions, media players, set-top boxes, digital billboards, cameras and car navigation systems, have already shipped worldwide with Flash technology, according to Adobe.
