WSO2 adds rules server to SOA platform

Technology is based on the Drools business rules management system

Open source enterprise SOA vendor WSO2 this week launched WSO2 Business Rules Server, for building business rules within SOA.

Based on the open source Drools business rules management system, the product separates business logic from infrastructure code. Business rules can be encapsulated in more accessible forms so that rules are accurate and represent current reflections of business needs, WSO2 said. Drools developers can integrate rules into SOA implementations.

"Rules are becoming an increasingly popular part of the enterprise application toolbox and a vital part of realizing the promises of agility and efficiency of service-oriented architectures," said Sanjiva Weerawarana, CEO of WSO2, in a statement released by the company. "With the addition of the WSO2 Business Rules Server to our WSO2 Carbon platform, IT and business users can work even more effectively together to build and maintain competitive advantage in their industries."

Pluggable rules engines in Business Rules Server are based on the Java Specification Request 94 rules engine API standard; the Drools engine is provided as the default engine.

Other features of Business Rules Server include a wizard interface, a management console, SOA interoperability, and quality of service. WS-* and REST Web services are supported. A rule repository offers versioning and rollback, governance, and lifecycle management.

The WSO2 Carbon platform uses the OSGi framework to provide a modular architecture, WSO2 said. With Business Rules Server, users can, for example, incorporate rule-based logic into workflows run by WSO2 Business Process Server, use rule-based message mediation within WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus, or augment a governance scheme with rules using WSO2 Governance Registry.

Offered under Apache License 2.0, Business Rules Server is available as a software download and as a WSO2 Cloud Virtual Machine for deployment on either the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or VMware ESX. The product in the third quarter of this year will be offered as a service running on the WSO2 Stratos platform-as-a-service.

WSO2 provides service and support options for Business Rules Server.
