Asserting that it's a myth that customers will abandon an overloaded website is ridiculous. Even if they wouldn't mind waiting for however long it would take to rectify the issue, many *will* assume that the people running the website are unprofessional and unprepared for their customers. Not only will this piss them off, it will completely kill their confidence in your ability to properly run an online business (If they can't even handle the amount of traffic they get, how are they handling their *security*?). Anyone that's run a large website knows that not only will they go elsewhere, customers will view your business as being incompetent and unprofessional.
