Symantec releases faster next-gen NetBackup, Backup Exec

Symantec on Monday unveiled new versions of its flagship NetBackup enterprise-class and Backup Exec midrange backup applications -- Backup Exec 2012 and NetBackup v7.5.

The Backup Exec 2012 version includes a new user interface that can automatically configure backups based on the most common policies and settings used by Symatec customers.

Amazon Web Services has launched a public beta test of AWS Storage Gateway, which allows enterprises to back up application data in Amazon's cloud using a software appliance, the company said on Tuesday.

The Storage Gateway appliance is a virtual machine that runs on VMware's virtualization software. It uses an iSCSI interface to integrate with applications.

Microsoft's SteadyState offered admins the ability to revert systems to a previously stored state every time it rebooted. SteadyState worked with Windows Disk Protection (WDP) to ensure any changes made to the Windows 7 OS would be redirected to an alternate, temporary cache. It was a (free) lifesaver for schools, libraries, and kiosk machine admins who needed to refresh the environment daily or even hourly with each new period. It was also great for Web cafés and such. But it was discontinued in December 2010 and fell out of support on July 1, 2011.
