WatchGuard's latest security appliance, the XTM 330, allows business travelers from small enterprises to use their iPads or iPhones to communicate securely with the office, the vendor said on Tuesday.

WatchGuard has implemented the IPSec functionality already present on the Apple devices, allowing users of Apple's iOS-based products to securely access corporate resources irrespective of where they are using encrypted tunnels.

OpSource on Friday announced a new cloud computing infrastructure service that it says meets the security and management needs of enterprises more effectively than rival offerings.

Users get a dedicated "virtual private cloud" of resources, and can determine how much access it has to the public Internet, according to OpSource. The VPC can be connected with users' on-premise data centers via a VPN connection.

Palo Alto Networks is adding an SSL VPN gateway and traffic shaping to its firewalls, offering businesses another opportunity to reduce the number of devices they buy and maintain.

While Palo Alto's previous software for its appliances supported site-to-site IPSec VPNs, it had no capacity to establish remote-access connections to individual users. PAN 3.0 software uploads SSL VPN agents to remote machines so they can establish VPNs with the appliances.

Cisco Systems plans to make remote work as simple as plugging a router into a broadband connection and starting up a PC.

Cisco Virtual Office (CVO), announced Tuesday, combines a variety of existing products with management software that hides the complexity of a VPN and other technologies. Remote employees with no technology training can use CVO to make their home setups work just like a regular office, Cisco said.

Yankee Group has been forced to retract a report on virtualization after several inaccuracies were reported. The research company has already withdrawn the report from its website.

Virtualization vendor VMware objected to a number of inaccuracies in the virtualization report, which seemed to favor its competitor Microsoft. The report still being carried on Microsoft's site, although VMware has asked Microsoft to remove it from there too -- as yet, this requested has not been responded to.
