When then-Apple CEO Steve Jobs promised in spring 2010 that iOS would support native printing, I and many others were happy, as the inability to print was a big inconvenience when using an iPhone or iPad. But iOS 4.2's printing support was disappointingly limited to a handful of AirPrint-compatible printers from Hewlett-Packard, and the list has hardly grown in the year since.

Richard Smith needed to build a wall-climbing robot for a customer -- so he printed one.

Smith, director of Smith Engineering Gb Ltd., used a CAD program to design a 3D model of the WallRover, a dual-track roving robot with a spinning rotor in the chassis that creates enough suction to hold the device to a wall. He then sent the design file for each component to a 3D printer, which sliced the objects into sections less than 1/100th of an inch thick by printing it, one layer at a time, using molten ABS plastic as the "ink."

Canon, Oracle to develop document processing technology

Canon will work with Oracle to integrate its business copiers and printers with the software giant's database and server products.

As a first step in the partnership, Canon subsidiary IT Solutions will sell a new platform that easily links products like Canon's imageRunner Advance copiers with Oracle's database, WebLogic and other offerings, the two companies said Monday. Brother, Lexmark, and Samsung models lead this field, though the other offerings are not many steps behind. The Brothers boast good speed, economical toner, and acceptable print quality. Lexmark scores with better speed and top-notch paper handling, but toner is pricey, and print quality is nothing to tweet about. If output quality trumps speed, take a close look at the Samsung. It has a nice set of office features, and the high-yield toner isn't too costly.

HP signs deal to acquire Printelligent

Technology giant Hewlett-Packard will acquire Printelligent to bolster its position in managed printing services for business clients, the two companies said on Tuesday.

An agreement between the two will let HP acquire all of privately held Printelligent's assets, including infrastructure, software, and workforce, the parties said in a statement. HP will combine those assets with its existing sales channels and broader services, the statement said.

Cisco Systems has teamed up with Xerox to create a mobile printing system that lets users print from any device to any printer.

The companies plan to make printing faster and easier for employees on the move, adding software to routers and switches to make the process faster and more secure. Cisco channel partners will resell the technology and a managed service that will be delivered by Xerox from a data center built with Cisco's UCS (Unified Computing System) servers, the companies are announcing on Monday.
