Update: New York attorney general settles case against Intel

The New York attorney general settled an antitrust case it brought against Intel in 2009, the chipmaker announced on Thursday.

While Intel said it doesn't admit to any violations of the law or that allegations in the suit are true, it did agree to pay $6.5 million to cover some of the litigation costs incurred by the New York attorney general and some nonstate public entities involved in the suit.

Corning readies updated Gorilla Glass for screens 20 percent thinner

Corning is shipping samples of an updated version of its popular Gorilla Glass product, that will allow screens to be 20 percent thinner at the same strength.

While the space saved will work out to only about 0.1 mm in most smartphones, for example, it will provide additional benefits such as greater visibility and less resistance for touch-sensing components, said David Velasquez, head of marketing for the glass.

Oracle Q2 net income jumps 17 percent, but hardware sales slump

Oracle's net income for the second quarter ended Nov. 30 rose 17 percent to $2.2 billion, with software sales rising but hardware-related revenue falling, the company reported Tuesday. Revenue for the quarter rose 2 percent to $8.8 billion.

New software license revenues, which are considered a key indicator of growth and customers' buying attitudes, were up 2 percent to $2 billion. Software license updates and product support rose 9 percent to $4 billion. Hardware systems products revenues dropped 14 percent to $953 million.

Bluetooth keyboards will get 10-year battery life with new chip, Broadcom promises

Broadcom is working on a Bluetooth chipset that will give wireless keyboards a battery life of up to 10 years, the company said on Tuesday.

If they had a battery life of as long as 10 years, that Bluetooth-based accessories could potentially never need new batteries, the chip maker said. A set of two AA batteries would be enough to power a keyboard using the BCM20730 Bluetooth chip to connect with a computer for its entire lifetime, Broadcom said.

Western Digital will be allowed to take over Hitachi's hard-disk drive business, but only if it sells off a 3.5-inch hard-disk drive production plant.

The ruling was made by the European Commission on Wednesday. Following an investigation, the Commission decided that the merged entity would only face competition from the recently merged Seagate-Samsung. It was feared this lack of competition would force up prices to consumers, hence the ruling that some of Western Digital's production assets be sold off.
