External developers will be able to build much more sophisticated applications and tools for Office 365 once Microsoft releases the next upgrade of that cloud-hosted communication and collaboration suite, according to a Microsoft partner.

NewsGator, a company that makes enterprise social software primarily for SharePoint, finds Office 365's current application development platform limited, but is looking forward to its expansion.

The inaugural IBM Connect conference will be held Jan. 16-17 amid the regular Lotusphere gathering, which runs Jan. 15-19 at Walt Disney World's Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando.

SAP, Google gearing up Google Apps, Business ByDesign integration

IBM launches enterprise social collaboration apps for tablets

Responding to increased use of tablets within workplaces, IBM will release on Wednesday several mobile applications designed to let employees use IBM enterprise social collaboration software with iPads and other mobile devices.

The new applications, free to customers with active licenses of the IBM software being tapped, have been built specifically for tablet interfaces and have security, IT management and compliance features.

Office 365, Microsoft's cloud collaboration and communication suite for organizations, is selling eight times faster than its predecessor, the Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) and has been particularly successful among small businesses, which make up over 90 percent of its customer base, the company announced on Tuesday.

Salesforce.com launches Do project management app

Salesforce.com's reach is about to get wider both in terms of functionality and target audience with the arrival of Do, a project management application announced in public beta on Tuesday.

Do is built on the Manymoon software Salesforce.com acquired earlier this year, and is "probably the closest thing to a consumer product we've ever done," said Sean Whiteley, senior vice president. "We took the Manymoon product, poured gasoline on it and lit it on fire."
