Storage software rollouts

IBM Tivoli, Fujitsu Softek, CommVault update software

Recognizing enterprises are drowning in storage data, vendors continue to roll out upgrades and enchantments to their storage management software.

On Monday Fujitsu Softek and CommVault Systems released updates to their respective storage-anagement software products. And next week at its developer conference -- DeveloperWorks Live -- IBM will announce enhancements to its family of Tivoli storage products.

Fujitsu Softek today introduced Vrsion 2.1 or its storage resource management software, Softek Storage Manager, and Softek Storage Provisioner, a product that automatically assigns and allocates disk storage space to applications as required through a set of user-defined and created configurations and policies.

CommVault too updated its storage software with Version 4.2 of its QiNetix software suite. The suite permits backup and recovery, as well as data migration and archiving. According to Chris Van Wagoner, director of product marketing at CommVault, the new version integrates several of CommVault's existing products into two categories of software: data movement and data management. The new features of the suite include expanded support for operating systems, including Unix, Linux, Oracle, Netware, and Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Additionally, the new version includes CommVault's Galaxy backup and recovery software.

Meanwhile, IBM Tivoli is prepping to unveil new enhancements to its suite of storage management products. At the conference,Tivoliwill introduce autonomic enhancements to IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, and IBM Tivoli Storage Area Network Manager. Specifically, the Storage Resource Manager V1.2 product will now be able to automatically provision storage before system space runs out.

"Customers are looking for something that works across an entire environment," said Laura Sanders, vice president of storage management products of Tivoli software at IBM in Armonk, N.Y. "People want to chose policies that can be automated and tie into the rest of their environment."
