I defined my first encryption key typing in a moniker and the actual key token and then created a new partition and assigned the new key to that. From that moment on, all backups running in that partition would automatically encrypt data using that key.
I launched my set of backups again, and they ran without a hiccup, as did restores. The only visible sign of using the encryption was a slightly longer execution time, about 10 percent more on each backup. Trying to restore data outside of the T120 got me an error message: The tape was unreadable, just as encrypted data should be.
The Spectra T120 gave off only good vibes during my tests. It is fast, scales reasonably well, and has great management tools. Encryption adds an unrivaled level of protection that you can deploy as simply or as sophisticatedly as needed.
