CA unwraps storage software for cutting IT cost, complexity

New SRM wares bring the promise of easier administration and automation

In keeping with the ongoing trend of IT cost-cutting, CA on Monday detailed new storage software that it claims reduces administration expenses while also improving data protection.

CA's news comes after Hewlett-Packard last week introduced new storage virtualization products and services.

CA announced Storage Resource Management (SRM) r 11.7 and said the latest incarnation offers centralized management of Unix, Linux, NetWare, and Windows storage resources that makes it easier for storage administrators to manage large numbers of virtual servers, allocate capacity, enforce policies, and troubleshoot. The software, CA explained in a prepared statement, also has tools that enable users to better use physical assets via storage virtualization.

CA's new Vantage SRM r12 SP2 automates storage management operations, namely monitoring and analysis, and takes corrective actions for an IBM z/OS storage environment, according to the company. The product also boosts data protection and compliance with new features that IT can use to locate data sets not being backed up according to corporate policies.

Both products are accessible via a common UI for managing storage resources from a single console, CA said.

Hewlett-Packard, for its part, last Tuesday unveiled a pair of new StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Arrays, consolidation and virtualization services, as well as other new services, all with the message that IT shops should buy now to prepare for economic recovery -- a stance one Gartner analyst questioned, suggesting instead that companies are focused on the here-and-now.
