Sun Solaris 10 to integrate ZFS and PostgreSQL
Sun announced a June release of the solaris 10 operating system that will incorporate ZFS 1.0, Sun’s new 128-bit file system, and the open source PostgreSQL database. ZFS automatically detects and corrects data corruption and eliminates the need for a volume manager. PostgreSQL will help leverage Solaris’ predictive self-healing, OS containers, and DTrace (dynamic tracing) technologies.

NetApp launches new SAN flagship
Network Appliance has released the FAS6030 and FAS6070, the first two models in a new line of large-scale storage systems aimed at supporting large numbers of NAS- and SAN-based business applications. According to NetApp, the modular systems can scale to 500TB of capacity and allow administrators to set service priorities for data sets and dynamically change them to maintain performance levels for key workloads.

Mercury Interactive offering manages changes
Mercury Interactive has unveiled Mercury Change Control Management, a new solution built on Mercury’s CMDB (Configuration Management Database) that helps automate the change management and review process. Change Control Management aggregates change requests, identifies the impact of changes at the infrastructure, service, and application levels, and generates business impact analysis of proposed changes based on predefined business risk.

Sun extends line of StorageTek virtual tape solutions
Sun has announced two additions to the Sun StorageTek VSM (Virtual Storage Manager) system. The VSM System 4e and VSM System 5 virtual tape solutions for mainframe environments simplify data management by storing data on a virtual disk buffer and migrating it to a tape device based on user-defined policies. Both models will be available in August.

Business Objects Vision Server combines reports and dashboards
Business Objects this month will release Crystal Vision Server, an addition to the Crystal line that provides access to information in databases and applications, creates reports and dashboards, and presents them in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, or via the Web. The product bundles the Crystal Reports designer and server, the Crystal Xcelsius dashboarding software, and Crystal Live Office for accessing data in Microsoft Office applications. Crystal Vision Server starts at $12,500 per package for five concurrent user licenses.
