Los Angeles - Microsoft has expanded its Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2000 with a partner program, allowing users to integrate MOM with third-party management products.
Several systems management software vendors, including IBM division Tivoli Systems, Computer Associates International, NetIQ and MetiLinx, have signed on to the new initiative, dubbed MOM Connector Framework, Microsoft said Wednesday at its Professional Developers Conference (PDC) here.
The connector initiative is meant to allow users to more easily manage heterogeneous IT environments, beyond just the Microsoft environment that MOM handles.
Microsoft also announced new "management packs" from third-party vendors, which will allow users to monitor more than just Microsoft products using MOM. Microsoft offers about 30 management packs, of which the most popular are Exchange Server pack and Active Directory pack, said David Hamilton, director of Microsoft's Enterprise Management Division.
Microsoft has created a catalog for the new management packs. Several vendors announced management packs Wednesday, including packs specifically for Web services management from AmberPoint, Actional and Service Integrity, Microsoft said.
Other vendors that offer or will offer packs for MOM are Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Veritas Software and NetIQ, Microsoft said.
Microsoft's opening up of MOM is part of its Dynamic Systems Initiative, a project that aims at reducing data center complexity, Hamilton said.
Microsoft is working on MOM 2004, which is due out mid-2004. The product will be targeted at a broader audience, including medium-size enterprises, and will offer a refresh of all Microsoft's management packs, Hamilton said. Currently, 3,500 people use MOM, mostly in large corporations, Hamilton said.
Microsoft also is planning to roll both MOM and its Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 into a new product called System Center. SMS 2003 is scheduled to be launched Nov. 11 at a Microsoft event in Europe.
