ICANN nixes .xxx domain names
Internet regulatory body votes against top-level domain for adult-oriented sites
Recommend ThisThe Internet's top regulatory body voted against adopting a .xxx top-level domain for adult-oriented sites on Wednesday.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) voted nine to five to reject the proposal, which had been supported both by the adult content industry and child safety advocates. Those opposing the proposal include ICANN Chairman Vint Cerf and President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Paul Twomey.
The Motion Picture Association of America, the U.S. film industry's regulator, never officially adopted the triple-X rating for adult films. Prior to the NC-17 rating, it used only a single X for all films to which only adults 18 and above should be admitted. Instead, the designation was used by producers of adult films as a marketing device.
