Zeus lightens the load balancing
ZXTM Version 4 smoothes the way to flexible and programmable Web traffic management
Zeus Technology has been shipping a load balancing product for a number of years, originally available as software only, and now as an appliance. The Zeus Extensible Traffic Manager (ZXTM) 7000 with Version 4 of the ZXTM software shows a level of maturity that experienced administrators will find comforting. It offers an easy, wizard-based configuration for beginners, command-line access for advanced users, and a dedicated scripting language that allows extensive adaptation to changing conditions in traffic control or load balancing. The new software also adds Web content caching and an XML/SOAP API.
The feature set of ZXTM is quite extensive, with all the capabilities in load balancing, SSL offload, compression, traffic management, HTML rewriting, application-aware persistence, application security, SLA monitoring, and traffic management that you might want. The sole limitation, which won’t matter to most users, is that it comes with four Gigabit Ethernet ports, whereas switch-based products such as F5’s BigIP have 24 ports or more. The ZXTM can be easily clustered with as many as 64 appliances, so it’s possible to scale out processing capacity for CPU-intensive tasks such as HTML rewriting or SSL processing, if necessary.
The ZXTM 7000 is the top model in a three-appliance family, with the 2000 and 5000 models serving the low end and middle. The ZXTM 7000 is a 2U, Linux-based server appliance, featuring 4GB RAM, dual Opteron processors, four Gigabit Ethernet ports, and a front-panel LCD that allows you to set initial network information if you don’t want to fuss with a serial terminal connection. When that initial configuration is set, the biggest problem you’ll have is figuring out which of the many features you want to implement first. This system is extremely capable and flexible, with good programmability for those who want more than it comes with out of the box.
