PalmSource introduced a range of mobile phone software and third-party applications at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes on Monday, highlighting its extension from PDAs (personal digital assistants) to smart phones.
The handheld OS (operating system) provider highlighted four new applications that draw on the company's recent acquisition of China MobileSoft, which makes a version of Linux for cell phones.
These include mFone for Smart Phone, a platform designed to run on Linux, and Feature Phone, which provides an interface and engine for telephone dialing. Also unveiled was mMMS, a short message service application, and mBrowser, an Internet browser optimized for handheld devices which can access all Net content, according to the company.
Offering further capabilities through the Palm OS, the company announced that it is partnering with Qualphone, which offers a push-to-talk client for cell phones. Palm said that it will work with Qualphone to port the push-to-talk application to the Palm OS.
Eight new third-party applications for the Palm OS were also on hand, including two enterprise tools: a mobile data service application for transmitting information between mobile devices and desktops, and a client that allows administrators to manage systems and users from a handheld.
For consumers, third-party developers cooked up an English-Spanish dictionary, a blog tool, chat software, an application for participating in online auctions, a news client and a new Kinoma game.
PalmSource also used 3GSM to show off the latest smart phone based on Palm's Garnet OS, which is being offered by Group Sense PDA. The Xplore M68 offers multimedia features, Bluetooth connectivity and a high resolution camera, the companies said. The smart phone is currently on offer in Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, with pricing determined by individual distributors.
3GSM runs through Thursday.
