BellSouth, 8x8 team up on VoIP

Residential VoIP will be rolled out to BellSouth's whole service area over the next few months

BellSouth is now offering a residential VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) service provided by 8x8, the companies said in a statement Friday.

The BellSouth Digital Phone Service is available now in a few areas, mostly in Florida, and will be rolled out to the carrier's whole service area over the next several months, said Bryan Martin, chairman and chief executive officer of 8x8. The Santa Clara, California, VoIP service provider will supply the equipment, integration and operational services for the BellSouth offering, he said.

The service costs $29.99 per line per month and includes a wide variety of features, including voice mail, according to Martin. Customers will be able to order numbers from any area code in BellSouth's nine-state coverage area, and the service will comply with 911 requirements. It is intended as a service customers can take with them when they move, Martin said.

8x8 has more than 100,000 subscribers to its Packet8 VoIP service and offers a small business service as well as video telephony using a special $99 phone, Martin said. BellSouth will trial 8x8's video service as a future addition, he said. In addition to BellSouth, 8x8 provides a private-label VoIP service through DSG International, the operators of Dixons electronics stores in the U.K.

BellSouth could not immediately be reached for comment.
