Twinhead uses Via CPU in new notebook PC

Via notches a design win in rivalry with Intel and AMD

Notebook PC maker Twinhead is using one of Via's latest central processing units (CPUs) in an as yet unreleased laptop dubbed the Efio!12BL.

The laptop is running a Via Technologies 1.5GHz mobile processor, the C7-M announced earlier this year. The design win is significant for Via, which has struggled to get its CPU sales going amid competition with the likes of Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.

"We'll have some other design wins to announce in November," said Tim Brown, a marketing manager for Via.

The Taiwanese chip vendor is using the new Twinhead notebooks in a hacking contest at the Hack in the Box Security Conference being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this week.

Via is offering a $5,000 prize to the hacker that can break its StrongBox security application during the event.

The C7-M is designed for battery efficiency, consuming as little as 0.1 watt of power when idling. Maximum power consumption in the 2GHz version of the chip is around 20 watts, according to Via.

The company has not yet announced the 2GHz version of the chip.
