Tadpole to build Opteron notebooks by June
New notebooks will ship with Sun's Java Desktop System installed
Follow @infoworldTadpole Computer Inc. will launch its first notebooks based on Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s Opteron processor by the end of June. The new notebooks will ship with Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java Desktop System installed, Tadpole said Wednesday.
The Cupertino, California, computer maker launched its first notebooks to ship with Sun's Java Desktop System at the LinuxWorld show in January. That range, called Talin, uses Intel Corp.'s Pentium 4 processor and runs the Java Desktop System on top of Suse Linux AG's distribution of Linux.
The Opteron-based machines will not be Tadpole's first 64-bit machines to run Java Desktop System. Its Viper range, based on the Ultrasparc IIIi processor, also ships with it. Java Desktop System includes a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software, the Mozilla Web browser, and Ximian Evolution e-mail and calendar tools.
The company provided no details of pricing or specifications for the new machines, and did not say whether they would form part of the Talin range. Tadpole's European representative could not immediately provide further information.
Tadpole sells a range of notebooks, most based on Sun's Sparc processor architecture, and is also a Sun reseller. It will sell the Opteron-based notebooks directly, and through its existing reseller network, it said.
