Sun Microsystems will use processors from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in future blade servers that it first announced on Feb. 10.
Sun will use Athlon XP-M processors, originally developed for mobile computing, running at 1.2GHz or 1.4GHz.
"We want to offer a standard, x86 platform. AMD offered the best compromise between performance, density, power consumption and heat dissipation," said Laurent Chaumereuil, product manager for edge computing at Sun Microsystems France.
Sun will offer two processor types on its blades: the UltraSparc IIi, running at 650MHz, and the Athlon XP-M. The UltraSparc blades will ship in the second quarter, and the x86 blades in the second half.
Sun wanted the Sun Fire B1600 chassis, which holds up to 16 AMD or Sparc blades, to consume less than 1,000 watts. Each Athlon processor consumes between 30 watts and 40 watts; the UltraSparc IIi running at 650MHz consumes a maximum of 18 watts.
