Intel acquires XML networking company

Sarvega, known for its networking products based on XML (Extensible Markup Language), has agreed to be acquired by Intel for an undisclosed amount, Intel announced Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Intel plans to fold Sarvega's technology and employees into its Software and Solutions Group. The world's largest chip maker has expanded its software development team in recent years to focus on designing software that ships with Intel's processors and chipsets.

Sarvega, based in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, develops XML-based software and hardware that allows IT mangers to use XML programs in their companies, an Intel spokeswoman said. XML is a language used to identify fields of data within a Web page so that data can be identified and analyzed. Some businesses are using XML to share data across their networks.

The acquisition follows on Intel's current strategy of designing software-based features into its products that improve the user's experience without having to fall back on pure processor performance, the Intel spokeswoman said.

Sarvega will continue to sell its line of XML routers and security products, and it will support those products as part of Intel, the spokeswoman said.

Sarvega has raised $20 million in venture capital funding to date, including an investment from Intel Capital, according to Sarvega's Web site. A Sarvega spokeswoman was not immediately available to comment.
