Fujitsu Siemens loads 64-bit Opterons in workstations

Fujitsu Siemens launches series of high-performance, low-energy workstations

Fujitsu Siemens Computer on Tuesday launched a new series of high-performance, low-energy workstations based on Advanced Micro Devices' dual-core 64-bit Opteron processors.

The companies are billing the workstations as environmentally friendly because of the reduced hazardous substances used in the machines and their power efficiency. The Celsius V830 is among the first platforms to use AMD's PowerNow! technology with Optimized Power Management. The technology is designed to save electricity by adjusting power according to the load of work being performed.

The power savings also leads to reduced noise because fans meant to cool the central processors can run at lower speeds, the companies said.

Fujitsu Siemens' Celsius V830 workstations target users requiring intensive calculation and graphics performance in areas such as engineering, digital content creation, visualization, virtual reality, and scientific computing, the companies said.

The workstations can be equipped with dual-core AMD Opteron 275, 270, and 265 chips, the companies said. They also include graphics power from Nvidia's core logic media and communications processors, the nForce Professional 2200 and 2050, and the AMD 8132 chip set with HyperTransport technology.

The Celsius V series is for memory-intensive computing, and can hold up to 32GB of double data rate (DDR) SDRAM (synchronous dynamic-RAM).
