Sun Helps Shift Toward RFID
Sun Microsystems last week announced a java-based product that enables suppliers to switch from tagging their products with traditional bar codes to RFID technology. The Sun Java System RFID Tag and Ship product is targeted at companies looking to comply with RFID mandates from retailers including Wal-Mart Stores and Target. In addition to Sun software customized for this offering, the RFID product includes a Sun W2100z workstation and monitor, the Sun Java System RFID Software, a Printronix RFID printer, an RFID reader, and a bar-code reader. Sun will announce pricing for Tag and Ship shortly, and the product will be available this quarter.

Google Updates Search Appliance
Google announced earlier this month that it has improved its Google Search Appliance so it now indexes documents that aren’t accessible via HTTP. The upgrade expands the range of searchable data through JDBC support for access to relational databases, and an API for establishing links to corporate data repositories. The Search Appliance also carries an enhanced security API to integrate with corporate security systems.

Empirix Touts Collaboration Software
Empirix is adding collaborative load testing for Web applications to its e-Test testing suite. Featured in e-Test suite 8.0 is a new version of the company’s e-Load enterprise load-testing product optimizes application performance and enables multiple users in different geographic locations to collaborate in real time, according to Empirix. Integration of distributed development and testing teams can shorten test cycles and allow for delivery of better applications in less time, the company said. With Version 8.0 of the suite, e-Load is installed once and accessed from any Web browser. Shipping in February, pricing for the suite starts at $30,000 for a configuration that tests an application being used by 100 "virtual" users.

ONStor Releases Bobcat
ONStor has released its Bobcat NAS Gateway designed to allow companies to consolidate and manage data on multivendor storage systems. Bobcat is compatible with more than 100 storage devices, scales from 1TB to 40,000TB, and includes performance provisioning, enabling automated and one-button workload migration, a capacity provisioning feature, and data protection capabilities. The Bobcat NAS Gateway is currently available starting at $19,950 with no capacity restrictions or per-user licensing.
