Service providers are fueling the drive toward VoIP in enterprises and small and midsize businesses with a flood of new services, some of which were on display this week at the Spring 2005 VON (Voice on the Net) Conference & Expo.
Time Warner Telecom introduced a service for large enterprises, and Covad Communications rolled out a pair of options for smaller businesses.
Covad Communications, Time Warner, and others are turning business voice calls into data packets as a cheaper alternative to traditional phone service, said Frank Dzubeck, an analyst at Communications Network Architects.
Time Warner said that in 21 U.S. metropolitan areas it will set aside a portion of a customer’s bandwidth just for voice. The service, TW Telecom One Solution, will be available by year’s end in 44 other cities. CovadCommunications unveiled VOA (Voice-Optimized Access) technology for its T1 and SDSL (synchronous digital subscriber line) data services.
