The PatchSee cabling solution concentrates on the frustration of finding patch cables in the mass of legacy cables without having to spend huge amounts of time tediously tracing the cable through the rat's nest. This simple solution bonds plastic fiber optics into the CAT5e or CAT6 cable so that you can illuminate one side and see the other end blazing away.
You simply use one of their flashlights that have a clip designed to slide up the cable and light up the known end of the cable. Since the fiber optic ends face away from the equipment or patch panel, the other end should be blazing away and viewable just by walking past the racks.
So while the PR folks that I spoke to were noticeably shy about talking prices, they did point out that these cables are just a bit more expensive than comparable patch cables in their class and I just had to notice that each of the cables that came in my demo kit also had what looked like a Fluke Network DTX cable test sheet in each bag.
When I first ordered my "free" sample kit, I thought that it was just going to be a cool looking cable that was going to be so far out of the pricing range that I would just dump the demo kit. However, the pricing was reasonable, in fact even a bit cheaper than the pricing I've seen on CAT5e and CAT6 patch cables through some resellers. Considering just how often we just shove a cable into our racks without labeling or logging; the tiny price difference will certainly pay for itself the first time I have to track down a cable snaking its way through my racks.
