Fortify buys Secure Software

Acquisition to enhance Fortify's integration with IBM's Rational Unified Process framework

Fortify Software plans to acquire Secure Software, a move aimed at strengthening the development tools vendor's presence in businesses that use IBM's Rational products.

Founded in 2002, Secure Software sells software that analyzes source code for security flaws. It is designed to work with integrated development environments like the IBM-sponsored Eclipse project and Visual Studio.

Fortify sells similar security auditing tools, but with the Secure Software acquisition, it will now have better integration with IBM's Rational Unified Process framework, said Mike Armistead, vice president of corporate development with Fortify.

The acquisition, announced Wednesday, also gives Fortify a services team and a presence in the Washington, D.C. area, he added. Secure Software is based in Mclean, Virginia.

Terms of the deal, which is expected to close in the next month, were not disclosed.

In addition to its CodeAssure analysis software, Secure Software has formalized a set of best practices for secure software development, called CLASP (Comprehensive, Lightweight Application Security Process). This is sold as a plug-in to IBM's Rational products.

Founded in 2002, Secure Software counts CA and Depository Trust and Clearing as clients. The company has about 20 employees, Armistead said.
