BMC scoops up ITM

ITM's apps for managing the business aspect of IT fills a gap in BMC's product line

BMC has bought ITM Software, which makes applications for managing the business-related aspects of IT operations, it announced Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

ITM's Business Suite product consists of a number of modules that focus on CIO-centric topics such as financial resource management, vendor relationship management and staffing.

One observer said ITM's technology should fill a gap in BMC's lineup.

"This is all stuff that for the most part BMC doesn't have, or if they do have it, it's not that strong," said Mary Johnston Turner, senior analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group. "It's a solid addition to their portfolio."

BMC is battling for market share in the IT operations and BSM (business service management) space along with "Big Four" rivals IBM, CA, and Hewlett-Packard.

The ITM deal is one of its latest strategic moves. Earlier this year, BMC moved to buy BladeLogic, a datacenter automation vendor, for $800 million.
