As companies worldwide emerge from the recession and plot their way through uncertain economic times, CIO magazine has surveyed IT leaders to discover exactly what their technology priorities are now, and how the changed economy is affecting their ambitions and fundamental responsibilities.
The good news: IT budgets are increasing, and CIOs are even getting some discretionary spend to begin experimenting again. But cost savings remains a key focus, so much of the increased spend will go for private and cloud services that are designed to bring down total operational cost of IT over time.
As far as technology prioirities go, cloud computing is certainly in the top five. But four types of virtualization round out the rest of the top 5, showing that internal focus on operational efficiency is a serious one. And close on the list is the topic of analytics and business intelligence, where CIO's survey has found very high interest by CIOs in moving to cloud-based analytics services.
