MySpace launches music service

MySpace Music is a set of tools that allow bands to sell music, including DRM-free tracks, directly from the social networking site

MySpace has launched "MySpace Music" in partnership with Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group. EMI is expected to sign up soon.

MySpace Music isn't a download store; instead it's a set of tools allowing bands to sell music directly from MySpace, including DRM-free tracks, as well as mobile content through a widget provided by Jamba. There'll also be ad-funded streaming music and video elements, as well as merchandise and ticketing.

"We're excited about the combo of social network on one side and access to music on the other," says Sony BMG global digital business head Thomas Hesse. "Bringing those together is the winning combination."

MySpace Music is looking for a CEO. The service will roll out over the next few months.
