The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) as part of its transition into what it calls ICANN 2.0 is looking for volunteers to fill a number of key positions, it said Monday.
ICANN seeks experienced people who place public interest ahead of any other interests to fill 16 positions, according to a statement. The Marina delRey, Calif.-based organization oversees global Internet domain name administration, IP (Internet Protocol) address allocation and root name server operation.
Available are eight seats on the ICANN board of directors, the organization's main decision-making body, as well as five positions on the Interim At-Large Advisory Committee, which links ICANN with individual Internet users, and three positions on the Council of Generic Names Supporting Organization, the part of ICANN that develops policy for generic top-level domains such as .com and .net, ICANN said.
Candidates can nominate themselves or be nominated until May 5. The selection process is being coordinated by a nominating committee, which intends to make its selections by early June, according to ICANN.
ICANN is in the midst of a large restructuring into what it has called ICANN 2.0. A new president and chief executive officer took charge last month.
The renewed ICANN should be able to do the work it was created to do, which is to oversee the Internet's name space, and end years of discussion about its efficiency, or lack thereof, the organization's leaders have said. The reorganization started last year.
