Fast puts new face on AlltheWeb.com

Fast Search & Transfer (FAST) has revamped its AlltheWeb.com search site, dropping banner ads, adding new features and offering a sleeker look and feel.

The update, unveiled Tuesday, comes one week after pay-for-placement search company Overture Services announced it is gobbling up FAST's Internet business unit assets for $70 million in cash and performance-based incentive payments of up to $30 million over three years. The deal is expected to close in April.

Ahead of the close, Oslo-based FAST has updated AlltheWeb by dropping banner ads, streamlining the user interface and adding a URL (uniform resource locator) investigator tool. The URL tool brings up information in the "Whois" database on who has registered a particular domain name, as well as providing a description of the site, what language it is written in, a list of subdomains and other information.

In an apparent shopping spree, Overture has also recently snapped up search technology company AltaVista, and said it plans to tie its new acquisitions in with its existing offerings to provide a suite of products and services.

Now that AlltheWeb is stripped of banner ads, it remains to be seen how Overture will manage advertising and paid listings on the property. The Pasadena, California, company has been gunning ahead in the competitive paid search result market, which has garnered attention for drumming up revenue despite the dot-com downturn.
