SPECIAL REPORT

2005 InfoWorld Compensation Survey

Salaries are up for the first time in years. But so are workloads -- and a sense that IT is underappreciated

2005 InfoWorld Compensation Survey
More money isn't everything. This year, dissatisfaction among IT workers and managers increases, even though total compensation packages are on the rise

Turnaround in take-home pay
Whereas IT staff benefited from slightly higher salaries, tech execs profited from the return of the bonus. Managers found a middle balance, with moderate gains in both forms of compensation

Tech bolsters budgets, business begs off
The tech industry is enjoying an influx of bucks, whereas business budgets slipped slightly. Once again, government and education organizations set a benchmark for making do with scarce resources

Staffing issues that affected the trends
This year's drastic HR actions were fewer in number and severity than last year – but worse than employers had forecasted

Regional rewards
With the exception of significant salary gains in Denver, the coastward migration of IT dollars continues

The rationale behind cuts and raises
Senior IT execs' salaries tended to follow company performance, whereas managers took home more pay for taking on more responsibilities

Bonuses loom large in executive compensation
Executive bonuses proved lucrative, and personal-performance perks lifted middle management compensation, but fewer IT staff garnered awards than they did the year before

The frustrations of running in place
Bean counting and obliviousness to shifts in technology surpassed thin wallets as the top reasons tech professionals feel management has given IT shorter shrift

Shifting insecurities
Tight budgets still give tech workers the job jitters, while the realities of outsourcing and offshoring threaten to further polarize the org chart

Short-changed and seeking new employment
More than half of IT professionals are entertaining thoughts of walking out the door, despite their 2005 salary increases

Better prospects, easier pickings
A nascent market for IT skills gives hope of an eventual payoff, as an increase in job openings makes competition among applicants less cutthroat

The value of IT by venue
Salaries in the business and government/education sectors trended upward in the past year, but the tech industry still pays top dollar
