Program Agenda - Day 1

The Virtualization Executive Forum in New York City concluded on September 26, 2006.

8:30am -8:45am

Introduction
  • Steve Fox, Editor in Chief, InfoWorld

8:45am - 9:30am

Keynote Address
Service Oriented Computing: Virtualization, Grid, and the Automation of IT
IT is in many ways a victim of its own success. Increasing demand on IT services often reveals current underlying technologies to be inflexible, expensive, and unreliable, a straightjacket on IT's ability to provide continued innovation and bottom-line benefit. How can IT escape innovation stagnation and deliver maximum value to the business? The answer is a new approach called Service Oriented Computing. Service Oriented Computing relies on Service Oriented Infrastructure and Service Oriented Architecture, leveraging Grid principles and Virtualization technologies to run IT as a service provider and accelerate business differentiation. Standards and interoperability play an ever-increasing role in this next era of computing. Focusing on the economics of IT service delivery and automation is every bit as critical as the technology and delivery.
  • Steve Yatko, Managing Director and is the Head of the Global R&D IT Group, Credit Suisse

9:30am - 10:15am

Keynote Address
Virtualization: Navigating Through Transformational Technology
Dr. Jeffrey Jaffe, Novell's Chief Technology Officer, will speak about virtualization on Linux and how it is opening up new possibilities for organizations around the world. With virtualization on Linux, the use of hypervisor and hyperthreading technology, today's technology executive can harness the power of the data center, better utilize computing power throughout the organization and ultimately free up the organization to deliver solutions and applications that truly help drive success. With all of that happening though, there is still uncertainty and a learning curve around this technology. Dr. Jaffe is looked to in the industry as someone to turn to when learning to adapt to and in adopting transformational technologies such as virtualization on Linux.
  • Jeff Jaffe, CTO, Novell

10:45am - 11:45am

General Session
Virtualization-Oriented Architecture: Defining a Smarter, Simpler Reality
Virtualization can be a spot solution to the narrow problem of getting more work out of less hardware. But when the virtualization of computing, storage, and network assets is embraced as a guiding architectural principle for planning and purchasing, an incredible transformation occurs: Discrete, fixed-purpose assets combine into fine-grained asset pools that can be reallocated and repurposed in milliseconds, even automatically, to cover traffic spikes, security threats, changing operating priorities and disaster recovery. Even with all this, virtual architectures are easier to run than real ones. Learn from experts about the benefits of integrating virtualization at the enterprise architecture level.
  • Moderated by Tom Yager, Test Center Chief Technologist, InfoWorld
  • Panelists: Lukas Lösche, Director IT Operations, arvato mobile GmbH
  • Michael Callahan, CTO and Founder, PolyServe
  • Jack Norris, EMC Rainfinity VP of Marketing, EMC
  • Wade Reynolds, Infrastructure Architect, Surgient

11:45am - 12:30pm

Keynote Address:
Storage Virtualization Strategies
A prerequisite to utility computing, storage virtualization eases the management of heterogeneous storage resources, improves data availability across the enterprise, and creates a foundation for disaster recovery and business continuity. This session will provide an overview of the various approaches to storage virtualization (in-band, out-of-band, array-based, switch-based, host-based), discuss how the technology is evolving, and share how IT organizations are using storage virtualization to manage SANs and NAS more cost-effectively and help their businesses become more agile.
  • Arun Taneja, Founder and Consulting Analyst, Taneja Group

12:30pm - 1:00pm

General Session Presentation Sponsored by Intel
Leveraging Virtualization Innovations to Achieve the True Dynamic Datacenter
Virtualization has been in existence for quite some time and with the continued improvements of SW tools more and more IT professionals are taking advantage of the technology. Currently, the principal usage model in the datacenter focuses on server consolidation and its associated benefits. However, as we look to the future, continued improvements in both HW and SW will soon expand the use of virtualization to benefit a much broader scope of IT applications including security, system management, and automated load balancing to name a few. New products and innovations will make virtualization a mainstream feature by the end of the decade. This session will cover what you can be doing today and in the near future to leverage these innovations and move toward achieving the true, dynamic datacenter.
  • Aaron Holzer, Sr. Product Marketing Engineer Virtualization Strategy & Programs, Intel

1:00pm - 2:15pm

Executive Luncheon and Networking Breaks

2:15pm - 3:00pm

Breakout Session:
Inside Hardware-Assisted Virtualization
In systems of scale, virtualization is baked into the architecture at every level. Virtualization is just as essential in the PC server realm, but the x86 design makes engineering challenging and system overhead high. Here, we'll talk about those challenges, how engineers have overcome them, and how new Intel and AMD CPU technology will change the picture for IT.
  • Moderated by Tom Yager, Test Center Chief Technologist, InfoWorld
  • Panelists: Jack Lo, Senior Director of R&D, VMware
  • Simon Crosby, CTO, XenSource
  • Mike Neil, Virtual Machine Technologies Product Unit Manager, Microsoft
  • Alex Vasilevsky, CTO, Virtual Iron

Breakout Session
Putting Virtualization to Work for IT
The primary roles for virtualization hitherto have been cross-platform validation in software development and for software evaluation. However, virtualization is rapidly breaking into new areas where it is delivering compelling benefits to IT organizations: server resource utilization, load balancing, software support, demos, and training. This session discusses these uses as well as other specialized contexts in which virtualization can deliver unexpected benefits.
  • Presented by Andrew Binstock, Principal Analyst, Pacific Data Works LLC, and Senior Contributing Editor, InfoWorld

3:00pm - 3:20pm

Networking Break
Location: Sponsor Kiosk Area

3:20pm - 4:15pm

Breakout Session:
Linux Virtualization, Present and Future
Nowhere is virtualization hotter than in the Linux server market. But with multiple vendors putting their weight behind divergent technologies, the best road ahead for customers can be murky. This session will look at the various Linux-centric virtualization technologies on the market, the challenges of implementing and managing them, how users can address those challenges today, and what it will take -- be it vendor cooperation or competition -- to make Linux the premier platform for virtualized infrastructure tomorrow.
  • Moderated by Neil McAllister, Senior Editor, InfoWorld
  • Panelists: Jack Lo, Senior Director of &D, VMware
  • Lukas Lösche, Director IT Operations, arvato mobile GmbH
  • Carlos Montero-Luque, Vice President, Product Management, Novell Open Platform Solutions
  • Brian Stevens, CTO, Red Hat

Breakout Session:
Better Testing Through Virtualization
Virtualization is widely employed in enterprises to perform software testing using mock lab scenarios. Unfortunately, many sites do not get the full benefit from this approach because they do not design configurations correctly or set up applications properly. This session examines existing software tools and industry best practices for lab-based virtualization.
  • Moderated by Andrew Binstock, Principal Analyst, Pacific Data Works LLC, and Senior Contributing Editor, InfoWorld
  • Panelists: Sameer Jagtap, Director of Product Management, Surgient
