In this keynote address, Microsoft's general counsel will address the commonalities between open source and proprietary software business models. Keynote: How to Guide an Enterprise into Open Source
In this keynote, Jon Williams will discuss how to guide an enterprise through the process of selecting and deploying open source tools. This is not simply a matter of selecting a tool and starting, but rather one of dealing with the nuances and skepticisms within existing IT organizations on successfully deploying open source across many platforms and applications. Kaplan has successfully deployed the following open source applications across its billion-dollar business: Apache, Linux, JBoss, Alfresco, Moodle, PHP, Perl, Twiki, PHPSurveyor, and MySQL. The company continues to look to new open source platforms for new projects.
But how did it get to this point? As Jon will note, open source adoption often requires a phased approach that includes:
- Phase 1 - Stand-alone success & obvious (Linux)
- Phase 2 - Road-map & research
- Phase 3 - Major projects: slow phase-out on non-open source
Jon will cover these issues, as well as: how open source factors into a build versus buy decision; customizability of open source platforms; agility and open source; open source as a low barrier of entry; how to include proprietary vendors in an open source discussion; using development partners for open source expertise; and how to get IT staff excited about open source.
