To judge from the number of announcements made at this week's RSA Conference, IT managers may need a defense against security software and hardware salespeople.
Aside from major announcements from Symantec, Microsoft, HP, and Cisco, a slew of other companies made major announcements at the conference.
Sun Microsystems announced new security enhancements and industry partnerships for its Sun Java System Communications products. Enhancements include support for the Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME) protocol in its Communications Express Web client that enables users of the Sun Java System Communications software to sign and encrypt messages for increased client-side security.
In terms of industry partnerships, Sun announced that Sun Java System Messaging Server now supports the NFS protocol which allows enterprises to more easily store, secure, and manage e-mail communications.
Kavado, an intelligent application security management provider, also announced an industry partnership. The company said its InterDo Automation Package now works with IBM's Tivoli framework. IBM Tivoli customers can now automate workflows for InterDo Web application firewalls to better manage security through the enterprise and maintain server availability.
Several companies introduced new versions of their security software.
Endforce, for instance, a context-aware endpoint security vendor, said it will introduce Version 2.0 of its Endforce Enterprise software at the show. The new version, scheduled to be available in March, features Context Aware Authorization technology that combines flexible assessment and reporting tools with enforcement capabilities, helping enterprises secure PCs used by contractors, remote workers, and LAN-based employees.
MailFrontier also upgraded its MailFrontier Gateway product at the show. Version 4.0 includes MailFrontier Cognite, an evidence evaluation system, and includes new functionalities such as zombie detection, virus traffic analysis, disguised text identification, and increased real-time LDAP integration. Delivering protection from all e-mail-borne threats, both external and internal, MailFrontier’s newest solution combines easy, flexible management and real-time scanning for quick and safe delivery of e-mail.
NetContinuum, an application firewall vendor, announced the latest release of its NC-1000 Application Security Gateway product line. Version 4.3 includes new features to enhance the availability, reliability, and performance of enterprise-scale deployments. These include AppDos (Application-Level Denial of Service) attack protection provided by rate limiting and blocking features, stateful application failover for Web session continuity assurance, and application performance acceleration enabled with an integrated hardware compression module.
Intrusion prevention vendors also announced new versions of their products.
TippingPoint an intrusion prevention company recently acquired by 3Com, announced the availability of the TippingPoint 5000E Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), which performs total packet inspection and prevention at five GBps with real world traffic. The product will ship next month.
Also offering a high-speed intrusion prevention system is Sourcefire, which is introducing its Intrusion Sensor 5000.The IS5000 is also designed to operate at five GBps and meet the requirements of mission-critical converged networks.
