Network Appliance Injects Virtualization Into Storage
Network Appliance this week unveiled a new version of its Data Ontap 7G enterprise storage software. The new version includes a virtualization engine and the capability of aggregating physical storage components into intelligent capacity pools. Data Ontap 7G pools storage resources with built-in logic that manages fine-grained data, and enables administrators to shrink or expand volumes to accommodate storage demand changes on the fly. Key new features of the latest version of Data Ontap 7G are FlexVol, which creates virtualized, flexible data containers, and FlexClone, which creates multiple, independently writeable versions of FlexVol data sets. FlexVol also gives administrators control of NetApp’s advanced data management features, such as point-in-time data imaging and replication. Data Ontap 7G is available immediately for all NetApp storage systems.
