Microsoft this week made available the first product in its digital rights management strategy that was announced back in February.
The Microsoft Windows Rights Management Client 1.0 was posted for free download on Tuesday.
The client, according to Microsoft, is required to run applications that provide functionality based on Windows Rights Management technologies. When detailed in February, Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) was described as technology for Windows Server 2003 designed to give enterprises the means to secure internal business information such as financial documents.
Windows RMS was envisioned to work with applications to provide a platform-based approach to persistent policy rights for Web content and corporate documents, according to Microsoft officials. Tapping Windows RMS, applications such as portals, word processors, and e-mail clients could control who accesses content and to what degree. The idea is to control the forwarding, copying, and printing of digital files.
The Windows Rights Management Client 1.0 runs on Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows ME, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP.
In addition to the free client download, Microsoft also released pricing information for its Windows RMS server software. Windows RMS client access license is priced at $37 each. A client access license five pack is $185. The product is available only through volume licensing programs.
