Microsoft plans to re-release Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 due to several problems users are having with the current version, a company executive confirmed Monday.
Microsoft has had several million downloads of the SP4 update rollup since its release June 28, but there are issues with "a small fraction of the downloads," according to Peter Houston, senior director of servicing strategy for Microsoft .
Some of those problems involve making connections to servers running Citrix and compatibility with third-party security software, according to information posted on Microsoft's Web site about the update rollup, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891861#kb1.
As a result of these issues, the company posted information and prescriptive guidance on this site to help users address any problems, and will post a new version of the update rollup soon, according to Houston. Microsoft has not disclosed a specific time frame for the availability of the re-release.
In the meantime, Microsoft will not remove the current SP4 update rollup from its Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update, and advised users to read the information provided on the site to see if the problems that have arisen with some users will affect them. If so, Microsoft is advising them to wait for the new software packages, according to Houston. If not, they should download the Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 that is currently available.
