InfoWorld's Test Center picks the best open source applications of 2011
Pentaho BI Suite
Pentaho BI 4.0 arrived in June with user-oriented enhancements that are certainly worthy of award. Most notable are the nice improvements in report creation that make ad hoc reporting accessible even to the most nontechnical users. The GUI to the Web-based report designer is easy to grasp, and the ability to quickly tie together multiple data sources for parsing, analysis, and heads-up dashboard display represents a giant leap forward from IT department-driven alternatives.
Competitor SpagoBI deserves an honorable mention for great value. If you compare free editions, SpagoBI will take you further than Pentaho. But SpagoBI still lacks some of the enterprise-worthy features, such as in-memory processing, scorecards, and forecasting, that set Pentaho apart in open source business intelligence.
