F5 Plugs Global Traffic and Link Control Into BIG-IP
F5 Networks’ TMOS (Traffic Management Operating System) is the heart of the BIG-IP application traffic manager’s modular architecture. In addition to allowing users to plug in features such as compression, rate shaping, and SSL acceleration as needs dictate, TMOS also supports three broader functional modules: the Application Security Module that F5 unveiled last October, and the Global Traffic Manager and Link Controller modules the company introduced today. BIG-IP Global Traffic Manager capabilities --such as the capability to track interdependencies among distributed applications -- address the challenges of managing application traffic across multiple datacenters. BIG-IP Link Controller features, such as topology-based routing, help optimize bandwidth utilization and ensure application performance and availability over multiple ISPs.

Orbital Fills in WAN Gaps With Software Client
Complementing its appliance-based, site-to-site solutions for WAN optimization and application acceleration, Orbital Data announced OrbitalEdge, an offering that will combine a datacenter appliance and a software client to speed up connections for SOHO and mobile users. Like Orbital’s appliances, the software client will support TCP flow control, compression, service classes, and protocol-specific optimization techniques to improve the performance of Web applications, e-mail, Windows file sharing, and other traffic over the WAN. To be generally available in Q2 and priced on a per-user basis, OrbitalEdge will also include a central management system that allows admins to configure and update clients, create performance and security policies, and view reports on usage and performance.
