Palm to launch Windows-based Treo in Asia
Palm aims to boost its international appeal with the new 3G handset
Follow @infoworldPalm will begin sales of the Treo 750v, a Windows Mobile-based 3G (third-generation) smart phone, next month. The handset is the first Windows-based Treo to be offered in Asia.
Palm hopes the release of the 750v will boost the company's international sales, said Paul Blinkhorn, Palm's vice president for Asia-Pacific. "We need to replicate the momentum we have in the U.S. in other parts of the world," he said during a Singapore news conference.
Priced at S$1,268 ($798) without a contract, the Treo 750v will be sold through Singaporean operator MobileOne. Based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition, the 750v supports GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), and WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) networks.
Palm also hopes to offer the 750v in other Asian countries, said Sharon Ee, a spokeswoman for Palm.
The 750v offers a 1.3-megapixel camera, 60MB of memory for user files, Bluetooth, a QWERTY keyboard, and a color touchscreen with a resolution of 240 pixels by 240 pixels and support for 65,000 colors. Weighing in at 154 grams, the handset also includes a slot for miniSD (Secure Digital) memory cards.
In addition to Asia, the Treo 750v will also be available in Europe next month through Vodafone Group.
