Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (Panasonic), NEC, Texas Instruments, and two affiliated companies are in talks concerning a possible tie-up in the field of 3G mobile communications, a spokeswoman for one of the companies said Friday.
No other details of the talks were available from the spokeswoman, NEC's Akiko Shikimori.
However a report in the Friday morning edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun business newspaper said the companies are discussing establishing a joint venture in Japan that will develop cellular telephone parts for the companies and also sell them to other phone makers. An agreement to form the company is expected this month, the newspaper said.
The largest shareholders in the venture will be NEC and Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., which will each hold about 30 percent, with the remaining split between TI, Matsushita Electric and NEC Electronics, the newspaper said.
