As expected, Research in Motion (RIM) on Wednesday launched its on-device application store for BlackBerry smartphones, called BlackBerry App World.
Available now in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, the store at launch features a mix of personal and business applications, the company said. Users can download App World to their handset from the BlackBerry Web site.

App World presents a catalog of applications for a user's specific smartphone model and can be accessed over Wi-Fi and cellular networks.
"BlackBerry App World aggregates a wide variety of personal and business apps in a way that makes it very easy for consumers to discover and download the apps that suit them while preserving the appropriate IT architecture and controls required by our enterprise customers,” said Mike Lazaridis, president and co-CEO of RIM, in a statement released by the company.
RIM expects that about 1,000 applications will be posted by partners on BlackBerry App World this week, including the New York Times and Salesforce.com. RIM's move follows Apple's iPhone App Store, offering iPhone applications.

App World is available for smartphones with a trackball or touch screen running BlackBerry device software version 4.2 or later.
