Technology business mergers often seem to happen with little concern for customer needs. In a refreshing reversal, the WebEx and Intranets.com accord looks like a winner for users of both services, with the newly formed WebEx One division delivering a trio of SMB offerings and services for professionals.
WebEx WebOffice, the anchor workgroup service now hosted by WebEx's MediaTone network, offers deep asynchronous capabilities, such as shared databases, documents, and discussions. Moreover, users now get truly seamless integration with WebEx. For example, it takes no training to establish a real-time meeting directly from the calendar, and you can invite participants outside of the system -- something that wasn't possible with Intranets.com -- and then track responses from all invitees.
There's also WebOffice Personal -- think PIM (calendar, tasks, contacts, and document management) with Web conferencing. WebOffice Personal easily adjusts to the way you naturally work. If you often work out of the office and use a BlackBerry, you can access shared calendars wirelessly.
The same philosophy shapes MeetMeNow, which stands apart from the myriad other IM services in several ways. First, setting up a MeetMeNow session is especially straightforward: Options range from e-mailing meeting invitations to simply clicking a button that's added to the popular IM clients (which automatically sends your chat buddy the meeting URL). Second, the in-meeting experience is outstanding; even passing control of your desktop to another user is effortless.
For workgroups requiring instant collaboration and real-time meetings, it will be hard to beat the pricing and integrated offerings of WebEx One.
